Mrs. Nachtigal's PIE Kindergarten
7/5/20
I am happy to announce that our student "Treasures" and Scholastic book orders have arrived!
Our class book, A Book is a House for Poets, turned out quite nice. I am especially pleased with the "About the Author" pages.
Through Scholastic I was able to order 2 more books for the children. Your child may choose a Pete the Cat book for reading practice. I chose Imagine, by Juan Felipe Herrera 2015 Poet Laureate of the United States, to inspire our young writers to continue writing and continue imagining.
- Available on my front porch in the plastic bin after noon on Monday, 7/6
- As before, feel free to come at a time that is convenient for you
- I will leave out my copy for Sadie's and Stone's families to review in case you'd like another chance to order your own.
- Not sure what/whether you ordered or what to pick up? Everything, except Pet the Cat, is bagged for you. Take your bag + one Pete. See below:
Class book = C Scholastic order = S Pete the Cat = P
- Ettamoya - C, P
- Phoenix - C, picked up others
- Sadie - S, P
- Molly - C, P
- Grace - C, P
- Avery - C, S, P
- Kaitlyn - C, S, P
- Mia - C, P
- Jasper - C, P
- Eliza - C, P
- Mason - C, P
- Jacob - C, picked up others
- Stone - Imagine, P

Thank you for checking back here for updates. PIE teachers (virtually) met with Mrs. Maraia today, and she anticipates that teachers will continue to provide practice/review assignments for students through at least March 27. Whether and how we might provide students with instruction of new material after that is under consideration. Meanwhile, we are all learning new ways to communicate, new resources, and new priorities.
We are very fortunate that our PIE Program is composed of families who believe in a focus on Nature in education, whose children have been taught to learn in a self-directed way, and who are motivated to create projects based on their interests. Although our Kindergarteners have only had a taste of these program components, they are primed to dig in and ready to take off. Tomorrow I will release my plan for our "Seasons" project.
Remember to sign up for SeeSaw! Check out photos on News from the Nest.

I hope many of you were able to stop by the classroom for the classwork I left for your child. Tomorrow between 9-6 is another chance. Mrs. Maraia will once again be signing out Chromebooks in the lobby; your child's login info was sent home Friday.
Consider following these guidelines for this week:
Daily Book - 20 minutes ,1-2 pages, every day. Although the children are experienced with this workbook format, start by reviewing the 10 exercises on the first page, what the symbols mean and how to illustrate the words.
Words Their Way - 30 minutes. 2 sorts/week. Review the pictures with your child. They can sort and glue them independently and stretch out the words on the back to write every sound they hear.
Sight ("Snap") Word games - 1 game/day. Suggested activities are modeled in the packet. Word cards are also included, best for adults to cut out. Have children make a copy card for each word to play matching games, such as "Concentration" (Memory) and Go Fish. Kindergarteners are responsible for the first 25 words and half of the next group.
Online Reading - 30 minutes/day. RAZ-KIDS. Child chooses a book from "LEVEL UP", listens to book, reads books, takes quiz before moving to another book.
Calendar book - 20 minutes/day. Complete calendar page 1, weather p. 2, Tues. Day #115, Wed. Day #116, Thurs. Day #117, Fri. Day #118
Online math practice - 30 minutes/day IXL. Assignments are gold-starred.
Read aloud - 20 minutes/day. I have sent 2 chapter books for the family to enjoy together as well as picture books, all gifts from our classroom library.
At-Home Learning Journal - 20 minutes/day. Instead of writing to you about their learning in school, have your child write me about their learning at home. Your child should begin with a detailed drawing, then write a greeting ("Dear Mrs. Nachtigal,"), continue with telling about what they studied, read, and learned during the day. I have included a stamped addressed envelope for you to mail me a week or 2's worth .
I WILL BE ADDING ASSIGNMENTS after I have completed entering report card data. Report cards will be available for you on Saturday.

3/16 2:00 P.M. UPDATE
Mrs. Maraia is in the lobby this afternoon and tomorrow signing out Chromebooks to those families who request one. Even when a family has a computer at home, its use may have to be restricted to the adult who is now working from home. Make sure she knows your child needs one.
A pile of daily reading, writing, and math practice materials, as well as a few little books, are waiting for you at your child's seat in our classroom. The books are gifts from me and our classroom library, mostly for family read aloud. Independent reading for the children will be available online through Classlink, and I will be calibrating your child's level over the next few days.
Please please check back here frequently. I will post new work and more detailed instructions for the paper materials asap.
Be well! ~NN

The New Tale of the Lorax
Of course, we teachers are concerned that the gathering we have planned for April 1 may be cancelled. We are continuing to operate as planned, however; rehearsals will go on until we're told they can't, and if we need to postpone our production until after the Spring Recess, we will. Meanwhile, we are choosing not to share any of this confusion with the children until and unless we are sure of a change. Thanks for your cooperation.
As for parents who have volunteered to help with scenery, props, costumes, and refreshments, please refrain from making any purchases until you have checked with me.
We are still in need of:

We are still in need of:
- photo coordinator, someone who will set up an online photo-sharing account where teachers and parents can upload their pictures of rehearsals and the performance.
- NEW - community outreach liaison, someone who will connect the classes to a local organization involved with trees, conservation, Arbor Day, . . .

Tips: Have your child tap a finger under each word (not syllable) to encourage them to see a word as an entity.
The patterned text is designed to scaffold your child's fluency with repetition: Rosie is a bee. Rosie is a tiger.
Encourage them to look at the facing picture to get a sense of meaning and "cross-check' with the initial consonant to inform their guess. Ex. Rosie the dog is wearing a tutu in the picture. Your child has been reading Rosie is a ______, so they should be very comfortable predicting the next word ballerina.
